FMP | Week 1 | Day 4

Thursday was workshop day this week. Our workshop was centred around how we make contact with things and the ways in which we could change that. It didn't really relate to my work and nor was it any more helpful because my proposal was more about conceptual touch rather than physical touch but i took part in it nonetheless.

We had to design and create some extensions to our limbs that would alter the way we touch things. I decided to use some sand paper and cable ties to create these little things that you put over your finger.

Once they're over your fingers you can touch certain things and it would feel very peculiar. not just because you're touching the inside of the sandpaper but because the sandpaper is also touching a surface and transferring that texture and friction through the device and onto the tips of your fingers.

These were a pair of aviator glasses that I taped some sort of weird rubbery chain-mail fabric onto. By doing this I was limiting the sight of the wearer and also changing their engagement with the world. Touching things when you cant see them clearly changes the way they feel. This is because your brain cannot familiarise itself with what you're feeling.

This was a device that was similar to the first but this time it was the whole hand. You put it on like a glove and viola, you now have a new sense of touch. Everything you touch feels rougher, if you run your hand down some sort of fabric it is almost impossible to move. This is because the grip from the sand paper is refusing to slide over the fabric.

These are the pages in my book which I used to present the workshop.

FMP | Week 1 | Day 3

I finally began my book and in doing so I decided to start it off with something very important, a mind-map. For me a mind-map is very important because it allows you to flood all of your ideas onto a page and then pick and choose what it is you want to focus on much clearer than trying to filter out everything in your head. It also shows your thinking in your book which is very important for the examiner to see.

My mind map consisted of everything that I could think of around culture. It included places of culture that already exist in the world such as museums, theatres, churches etc. It also included how we as humans express our culture which can be through human behaviour and artistic and ritualistic expression. I tried to keep the mind-map quite vague as I didn't want to step into deep water on the first few pages of my book and also because I wanted to become more familiar with certain cultures other than my own first.

In order to get some visual inspiration I created a very sparse moodboard. It includes current buildings of culture from around the world. As I was designing a contemporary space i decided to include some whacky looking buildings.

FMP | Week 1 | Day 2

The first official day back from our Easter break prompted a quick catch-up lesson in order to all get back on the same page. We began with a short task to get back into things. We were tasked with discussing our work experience week with our classmates and simultaneously drawing the people seated opposite us.

These were the drawings I produced as a result of this task.

FMP | Week 1 | Day 1

Our first day back from half term landed on a self directed study day. As our FMP was underway I spent this day researching as it was the only way at this stage that I thought could help me.

I had just finished drafting up my proposal and decided to further research problems in and around our world. This included reading up on recent news articles on BBC news and the Independent. My proposal for this project was to create a space that removes the barriers between cultures. I want to design a building that welcomes all races, faiths and religions to become united and harmonious.
